Welcome to The Trades Titan.
Every week I share one real thing I find inside contractor accounts. What's working, what's breaking, and exactly how to fix it. No fluff. No theory. Just what's actually happening right now.
Let's get into it.
I FOUND SOMETHING UGLY INSIDE A CLIENT'S ACCOUNT LAST WEEK.
They'd already run it through an AI audit tool before calling me. The tool flagged a bunch of "problems" — most of which were campaigns we never even set up. Completely wrong.
So I went in myself.
What I found was worse than anything the AI flagged.
Thousands of dollars. Gone. To mobile gaming apps.
Not homeowners with a leaky roof. Not families with a broken HVAC in July.
Kids. Tapping ads. Between levels of a phone game.
HERE'S WHY THIS IS HAPPENING — AND WHY IT'S GETTING WORSE.
Google is losing search traffic to AI tools like ChatGPT. Fewer people are Googling things. That means Google has less quality ad inventory — fewer real homeowners actively searching for contractors.
So Performance Max (PMax) — which is supposed to find you customers across Google's whole network — quietly routes your budget to whatever inventory Google has left. And right now, a lot of that is mobile gaming apps.
Your dashboard looks fine. Clicks are coming in. Cost per click looks normal.
But the leads are garbage. Because the people clicking aren't your customers.
THIS ISN'T JUST A PMAX PROBLEM.
There are three ways your budget is being drained right now.
🔴 Mobile App Traffic
PMax routes spend to apps by default. You have to manually block it. Most business owners don't know this setting exists.
🔴 Competitor Click Fraud
Competitors in your market deliberately click your ads to burn your daily budget. Once your budget is gone, your ads disappear from search. Theirs show up instead. It's cheap, it's common, and it's happening in your market right now.
🔴 Bot Traffic
Modern bots look like real users. Standard detection catches less than 40% of them. They click your ads. They never call. They cost you real money every single day.
Here's what that adds up to: plumbing companies see click fraud rates as high as 46%. A roofer or HVAC contractor spending $5,000/month on Google Ads could be losing $600–$750 every single month to wasted clicks.
That's $7,500–$9,000 a year.
A new truck. Two months of payroll. Gone.
HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT. DO THIS TODAY.
✅ Fix #1 — Block mobile app traffic (5 minutes)
Tools → Content Suitability
Excluded content themes: Games(fighting), Games(mature)
Placements → Apps → Check every single category(140)
Done. Google can no longer route your budget to gaming apps.
✅ Fix #2 — Check where your money is actually going
Go to Insights → Channel Performance
Set the dates you want to explore. Export the CSV.
Do the same for When and Where ads showed. Get a CSV for when and where.
Take them all and drop them into ChatGPT. Ask: “Where is my traffic coming from? What part of this traffic is bad traffic for my [industry]”
If apps and garbage sites are eating a big chunk of your budget, you now know why your leads have been garbage.
✅ Fix #3 — Add negative keywords
Google allows 10,000 negative keywords per PMax campaign. Start with:
"DIY" — "free" — "how to" — "jobs near me" — "training" — "certification"
These are people who will never hire you. Every click from them is money out of your pocket.
✅ Fix #4 — Consider click fraud protection
Tools like ClickCease, Fraud Blocker, and ClickGuard catch what Google's built-in detection misses. If you're spending $3,000+ a month on ads the cost pays for itself fast. Worth a free trial at minimum.
ONE MORE THING BEFORE I GO.
I started The Trades Titan because I've watched too many good family-run businesses get burned by systems they didn't fully understand. These owners aren't lazy. They're busy running their company. Nobody showed them where to look.
My goal — with my business and with this newsletter — is to help home service owners build something real. Something they're proud of. Something worth passing down.
That's why every week you'll get one finding, one fix, and nothing else.
See you next week.

P.S. — Forward this to a contractor friend running Google Ads. That one fix above could save them thousands this year.
